John Churcher Electrical, part of the ERS Group, was proud to contribute to the creation of the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC). This cutting-edge £44 million facility combines world-leading expertise in brain mapping with state-of-the-art brain imaging and stimulation technology.

Opened by Her Majesty the Queen in June 2016, the centre offers a spacious, collaborative, and sustainable environment designed to support groundbreaking research in neuroscience.

Scope of Work

Our team provided a comprehensive range of electrical services to support CUBRIC’s advanced research infrastructure, ensuring every detail was tailored to the facility’s specific needs:

Electrical Design: Developed bespoke electrical systems to support the centre’s sophisticated equipment, including Europe’s most powerful brain scanner, the Siemens 3 Tesla Connectom MRI system.

Lighting & Lighting Controls: Installed precision lighting throughout the facility, including MRI labs, brain stimulation labs, cognitive method labs, and public areas, ensuring optimal functionality and energy efficiency.

Data & Communications Networks: Provided robust data systems to support cutting-edge imaging technologies and facilitate collaboration among researchers.

Low Voltage Distribution: Delivered reliable power distribution to support high-demand equipment, including MRI and brain stimulation systems.

Fire Systems: Installed comprehensive fire detection and alarm systems to meet safety requirements and protect valuable research facilities.

Security & Access Control: Implemented secure access systems to safeguard sensitive areas, including MRI labs and the Clinical Research Facility.

Electrical Testing & Inspection: Conducted extensive testing and inspections to ensure all installations met compliance and performance standards.

Key Achievements

Delivered electrical infrastructure to support some of the world’s most advanced brain imaging and stimulation equipment.

Enhanced functionality and safety across 4 MRI labs, 5 brain stimulation labs, and 10 cognitive method labs.

Successfully collaborated with BAM Construction and other stakeholders to meet strict deadlines and deliver the project on time.

Created a sustainable and energy-efficient environment in line with the project’s green building goals.
